How to Pull Taffy

Read this descriptive instruction to learn

  1. Begin standing in the T'ai Chi Chih stance with feet in a comfortable "v" and posture aligned.
  2. Shift weight to right and bend right knee.
  3. Step to left with left leg resting on your left heel. Keep heels of both feet aligned on their back edge.
  4. Turn waist slightly to the right as you...
  5. Brush left hand against left leg with palm facing upward moving forearm to rest in front of tantien or belly area with left palm in front of right hipbone. Keep fingers extended softly.
  6. Cross right arm over the left arm, right palm facing downward. Suspend right arm above left arm in this "x" position.
  7. Slowly turn waist toward the front wall while moving the "x" to find your palms facing each other in a "pulling taffy" position in front of your right hip bone area.
  8. Lower left heel to floor during waist turn.
  9. Glide your weight slowly from right to left as you separate your hands. Both feet connect to the ground with the weight shift.  NO rising of the heel after initial lowering.
  10. During the slow glide of the weight shift from heaviness on the right to heaviness on the left allow your right hand to ground you palm facing the ground near your right thigh while the left hand travels to the left side in an arc parallel to the floor to finally arrive extended on your left side as if offering someone a tray of food.
  11. Turn your waist slightly towards the left to feel the complete weight shift to the left leg.
  12. With a complete weight shift, pick up right foot and finish with a graceful conclusion.
  13. Complete the entire sequence again on the left side.
  14. Begin standing in the T'ai Chi Chih stance with feet in a comfortable "v" and posture aligned.
