Connect with nature on Earth Day near Windsor. 4.22.23
Hiking in snake country offers you beautiful scenery of our rocky arid state and may put in up close and uncomfortable with snakes. Use your fives senses plus some common sense when in snake country. Respect the snake. Allow nature to flow. Be fully present observing what is as you move with nature on trails. Snakes prefer the off trail environment. Stick to the trail.
Bull snakes resemble rattlesnakes. Bull snakes are a vital part of our environment here on the front range. Give them space and keep them alive. They will hiss and rattle leaves with the movement of their tail. They have teeth without venomous fangs. Give all snakes the space they deserve.
Being mindful in nature is a practice. Awareness allows you to notice what is with all your senses. Notice the plants, animals, creepy crawlers, earth, sun, water, air, and space with each of your five senses to be fully present in nature. Your reward is an experience that flows without judgment and a loss of your sense of time. Mindfulness expands the feeling of joy in your life. As you create a practice of mindfulness, you design a life filled with joy.
The uniqueness of our front range attracts people to call this place home and visitors to come from around the world. With all that human activity, our air is less than ideal. Many types of toxins exist in our air and may impact the health of your lungs. Learn about air quality and do what you can to protect the air we breathe.
When hiking in groups, talk to let the animals of nature know you are in their home environment. Mountain lions and bobcats live in the open spaces and covered wilderness where we enjoy hiking. By paying attention to what is around you, you will notice the other creatures living in your hiking environment. Additionally, you will notice objects to use in your defense if you experience an actual encounter with either of these graceful, stealthy felines.
Our hiking society explored Dixon Reservoir on April 30, 2023. The day was perfect and the trails were busy with all kinds of users. Hopefully, you, too, will enjoy a brief trip into the natural world of grassy meadows, lake views and trails near the reservoir.
Our hiking society explored Coyote Ridge's Rim Rock Trail on May 5, 2023. The day was perfect for this 6.2 mile adventure into the valley. This is a great trail to work on stamina for this summer's mountain hikes.
Our hiking society explored Coyote Ridge's Natural Area trail again on May 19, 2023 for our 20th hike. The day was cool and cloudy for this four mile adventure up to the rim. Practice mindfulness as you watch, listen and learn.
On May 21st, we hiked along the rising Poudre River Trail beginning at the Kodak Trailhead. The smoke from the Canadian Wildfires lingered in the air and we wanted to be outside in an area with lots of vegetation. The river is high from all the spring rainfall and flows quickly following a path of least resistance.
I hope you enjoy watching Flow with the Poudre in May as you take a brief break from your busy day.
Mindful movement is supported by many different actions. Biking is one of them. From the raised seat of a bike, riders on familiar trails often see things from a new perspective. Bringing newness into your life offers you excitement. This video shows its viewers the changing river pattern following a month of heavy rain.
Our hiking society embraced the weather wearing the right clothing to appreciate the meditative qualities of water. When you need a few moments in nature to find your center but cannot get away, watch, listen and calm with this short video. All images taken by JoEtta Heck on May 11, 2023. After watching the video, click on the end image to learn more about how to CALM with our program.
Expanding your personal awareness includes noticing with all your senses what surrounds you in nature. This video was recorded along the Poudre River Trail on May 1, 2023 of frolicking frogs living along the water's edge. As you listen for about one minute, notice when your mind drifts away from the sound, then return your attention to listening to the sound. This listening, noticing when you drift, and listening again is a practice of mindfulness and a form of meditation.
Continue to expand your personal awareness using your sense of sight. Recorded at Windsor Lake in Boardwalk Park on May 21, 2023, this video features a pelican leisurely swimming across the lake. Its soft and gentle rhythm evoked a meditative response within me as I watched. May you also embrace an opportunity for a few minutes of meditation as you view this encounter. While watching the repetitive movement of the pelican's gracefulness, notice when your mind drifts away from the image, then return your attention back to the movement without judgment and watch. This watching, noticing when you drift ,and watching again is a practice of mindfulness and a form of meditation.
Connect with the sounds of nature discovered in Rocky Mountain National Park at Alluvial Fan. There are four individual videos to experience while noticing how each makes you feel. This is a practice of mindfulness as experienced in the natural world.
We wondered and wandered from the Poudre Canyon into Rocky Mountain National Park, together.
